Sam Curtin started Good Sheet, his photographic mounting and scanning business, at precisely the right time for me. I was preparing two exhibitions of work with geological and archaeological content and was intending to print on Photorag as I love the surface qualities. My hanging options were to pin, or suspend prints from wires, frame behind glass, or mount on aluminium composite (ACM). Aesthetically, ACM was my first choice as I could retain the tactility of the surface and also, to a certain extent, transcend the perception of it being a printed surface. Mounted in this way the image becomes more object like. However, it seemed the only company that could do this was in Auckland and very expensive. That’s when I met Sam.
Sam’s exactly the kind of person you want handling your work. He’s a photography grad from Massey and a keen user of film cameras (he has quite a collection); he shows meticulous attention to detail and never seems hurried or distracted. His prices are very reasonable. Sam also runs a high end film scanner, an Imacon. Because I was developing a renewed interest in printing some of my early work – 70s, 80s and 90s stuff – I sent him a bunch of negs and trannies. The results are superb and the 35mm negs will print to 750x500mm @ 300dpi.
So, in Wellington, we now have Good Sheet and someone who can carry out these services to the highest standard, at reasonable prices, and who is such a pleasure to deal with.
